Clark County Offers 2,300 Free Trees to Local Residents

Clark County residents can receive a free tree through the Community Canopy Project starting Sept. 3. With 2,300 drought-resistant trees available, early reservations are encouraged. can soon claim a free tree for their yards through the Community Canopy Project. The fall giveaway opens to every Clark County ZIP code on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 8 a.m. PDT.

Clark County Environment and Sustainability and the Arbor Day Foundation will distribute 2,300 trees during the program. However, supplies are limited. Residents should submit their requests early for the best selection.

Drought-Resistant Trees Available

Several drought-resistant varieties will be available. Options include Chinese pistache, Elberta peach, Russian pomegranate and southern live oak trees. Other suitable species may also appear during the ordering process.

These trees can improve a home’s appearance while providing valuable shade. In addition, strategic planting may help residents lower cooling costs during Southern Nevada’s hottest months.

“This past August was the hottest August ever for Southern Nevada,” said Robert Burgy, manager of the Clark County sustainability office. “Shade trees help reduce heat, absorb air pollution and can also help lower energy costs when planted strategically around your home.”

How to Claim a Free Tree

Residents can visit ArborDay.org/ClarkCountyDES to reserve a tree. The online application helps participants select an appropriate tree and choose a suitable planting location.

Most trees will be delivered directly to recipients’ homes. Meanwhile, a limited number will be available for pickup during Commissioner Michael Naft’s annual Fall Fest.

The community event will take place Saturday, Oct. 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Laurelwood Park. Pickup trees will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Growing Clark County’s Urban Forest

The Community Canopy Project operates through the county’s Stay Cool Clark County initiative. The program distributes more than 4,500 trees each year for residents to plant on private property.

Organizers hope the trees will expand the region’s urban forest and bring more shade to heat-affected neighborhoods. Trees also absorb pollution, reduce surrounding temperatures and create healthier outdoor spaces.

Now entering its third year, the project has already provided nearly 9,000 trees to Southern Nevada residents. This fall’s giveaway offers another opportunity for local households to create cooler yards while supporting a greener Clark County.

Residents should act quickly because popular tree varieties and delivery slots may disappear soon.
