Millions of people across Spain and the United Kingdom looked to the skies Wednesday evening as the August 12, 2026 solar eclipse delivered one of Europe’s most spectacular astronomical events in decades.
The eclipse brought complete darkness to a broad stretch of Spain, while viewers throughout the UK experienced an extraordinary partial eclipse. Crowds filled beaches, parks, city squares, observatories and countryside viewing locations as the Moon moved across the face of the Sun.
For those fortunate enough to stand inside Spain’s path of totality, daylight briefly disappeared as the Moon completely covered the Sun. The sudden darkness revealed the glowing solar corona and created an unforgettable scene across the Spanish landscape.

Total Eclipse Sweeps Across Spain
The path of totality crossed Greenland and Iceland before moving over the Atlantic and reaching northeastern Portugal and a large section of Spain. NASA had calculated a maximum totality of approximately two minutes and 18 seconds along the eclipse’s overall path.
Spain became one of the world’s prime viewing destinations.
Cities and regions including A Coruña, Oviedo, Gijón, Santander, Bilbao, Burgos, Zaragoza, Valladolid, Valencia and Palma de Mallorca were positioned within the path of totality. The exact duration varied considerably by location.
Oviedo experienced approximately one minute and 48 seconds of totality, while Gijón received roughly one minute and 45 seconds. Zaragoza experienced about one minute and 24 seconds, and Palma de Mallorca saw approximately one minute and 36 seconds.
Bilbao was much closer to the edge of the path, receiving about 30 seconds of totality.
The timing added another remarkable element. Totality reached Spain during the evening, placing the eclipsed Sun relatively low above the western horizon. As daylight disappeared, observers experienced an unusual combination of eclipse darkness and sunset conditions.

UK Experiences Spectacular Partial Eclipse
Britain did not enter the path of totality, but Wednesday’s eclipse still produced a dramatic show across the country.
The Moon covered more than 90% of the Sun across much of the UK, with western areas experiencing some of the greatest coverage. Cornwall approached roughly 96% coverage, while locations farther north and east still experienced an exceptionally deep partial eclipse.
London’s partial eclipse began at approximately 6:17 p.m. BST and reached maximum eclipse at about 7:12 p.m. It ended shortly after 8 p.m.
The changing light became increasingly noticeable as maximum eclipse approached. Skies dimmed, temperatures dropped in some locations and the remaining portion of the Sun appeared as a brilliant crescent.
Crowds gathered across Britain to watch the event using certified eclipse glasses, telescopes equipped with solar filters and homemade projection devices.

Millions Share a Rare European Moment
Wednesday’s eclipse quickly became a shared event across Europe.
Photos captured crowds staring toward the partially covered Sun in Britain and the extraordinary corona surrounding the completely eclipsed Sun in Spain. Images from across Europe showed the progression from a small indentation in the solar disc to an increasingly narrow crescent before maximum eclipse.
Cloud cover complicated viewing in some locations, but many observers still managed to see at least portions of the eclipse. Large gatherings and organized viewing events transformed the astronomical phenomenon into a major summer event.
The spectacle also attracted international visitors who had traveled specifically to Spain for totality.
Another major eclipse is already approaching. On August 2, 2027, a total solar eclipse will again cross Spain, although its path will be farther south.
For the millions who watched Wednesday’s sky dramatically change, however, the August 12, 2026 solar eclipse delivered something photographs can only partly capture: a few extraordinary minutes when an ordinary summer evening suddenly became unforgettable.
