LAS VEGAS — The latest Las Vegas Aviators games produced two different weekend results against the Sugar Land Space Cowboys at Las Vegas Ballpark. Las Vegas earned a victory Friday before its five-game winning streak ended Saturday.
The Aviators have already secured a Pacific Coast League playoff berth. However, the weekend results also exposed areas that require attention before postseason baseball arrives.
Aviators Pull Away Friday
Las Vegas defeated Sugar Land 11-3 on Friday, Aug. 28. Although the Space Cowboys scored first, the Aviators quickly took control and carried a 4-3 lead into the middle innings.
Las Vegas added two runs in the fifth inning and four more in the seventh. As a result, the Aviators extended their winning streak to five games and delivered another convincing performance for the home crowd.
Sugar Land Answers Saturday
Las Vegas took a 1-0 lead Saturday when Cole Conn drove home a run with a first-inning double. Sugar Land moved ahead in the third before adding runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings.
Zach Dezenzo and Cavan Biggio homered for the Space Cowboys. Meanwhile, Sugar Land’s bullpen delivered 7⅔ scoreless innings and helped secure a 5-1 victory. The Aviators struck out 16 times as their winning streak ended.
Road Series Begins in El Paso
Las Vegas opens a six-game series against the El Paso Chihuahuas on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday games begin at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday and Sunday games start at 12:05 p.m. All times are local in El Paso.
The Chihuahuas are the San Diego Padres’ Triple-A affiliate. Therefore, the series will provide a meaningful test for the Aviators’ pitching depth and lineup.
Friday and Saturday Games Return to Las Vegas
The Aviators return home to face the Sacramento River Cats from Sept. 8 through Sept. 13. Friday’s Sept. 11 game begins at 7:05 p.m. and includes Faith and Family Night followed by postgame fireworks.
Saturday’s Sept. 12 game also begins at 7:05 p.m. Mighty Moguls Night will celebrate young Las Vegas entrepreneurs, while the first 2,000 fans will receive an Aviators jersey.
Sunday’s regular-season home finale begins at 12:05 p.m. Las Vegas will then prepare to host the Pacific Coast League championship series beginning Sept. 22, when every inning will carry postseason pressure.
