LAS VEGAS — Raising young children comes with plenty of questions, especially when it comes to understanding emotions. To help parents and caregivers navigate those early years with confidence, United Way of Southern Nevada and Intermountain Health are offering a free community workshop focused on the emotional well-being of children from birth to age five.
The workshop, “Understanding Your Toddler’s Emotions: A Workshop for Parents and Caregivers,” will take place on Thursday, July 23, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at United Way of Southern Nevada. The event is part of the organization’s Big Feelings, Strong Foundations workshop series, which provides families with practical, research-based strategies that can be used every day.

Helping children understand big emotions
Young children often express frustration, excitement, sadness and fear in ways that can feel overwhelming to parents. During the workshop, child development specialists will explain which emotional behaviors are typical during early childhood and why those reactions are an important part of growing up.
Participants will also learn how caregivers can guide children through difficult moments using co-regulation, a process in which adults help children calm their emotions while teaching healthy coping skills.

Practical tools parents can use every day
Rather than focusing on theory alone, the workshop emphasizes simple techniques families can begin using immediately at home.
Attendees will learn how to:
- Recognize emotional milestones for children ages 0 to 5.
- Respond calmly during emotional outbursts.
- Build stronger connections through everyday conversations and routines.
- Identify signs that additional developmental or behavioral support may be helpful.
Organizers hope parents leave feeling encouraged instead of overwhelmed, reminding families that emotional ups and downs are a normal part of childhood.

Building stronger families across Southern Nevada
United Way of Southern Nevada believes there is no such thing as a perfect parent. Instead, small, consistent moments of support help children develop confidence, resilience and healthy emotional skills that can last a lifetime.
For more than 65 years, United Way of Southern Nevada has worked to strengthen local families through education, financial stability and community partnerships. Programs like Big Feelings, Strong Foundations continue that mission by giving parents valuable resources during some of the most important years of a child’s development.
