LAS VEGAS —The Las Vegas Science & Natural History Museum will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 1-30 with a community-curated exhibition highlighting the wildlife, landscapes, traditions and culture of Latin America.
The month-long exhibition will feature artwork by local artists exploring how wildlife, ecosystems and natural landscapes help tell stories about culture, identity and belonging across Latin America.
The celebration will also launch Woven Throughout History, a new multi-month exhibition and workshop series that connects cultural traditions with the science and history behind textile-making.
Culture, Science and Art Come Together
Local textile artist Aleida Castro will open the series as the museum’s resident guest artist. Her artwork and workshops will explore Mexican textile-making traditions and the stories passed through generations of artisans.
“My art practice reflects my cultural heritage,” Castro said. “Embroidery has a long history in Mexico that predates Spanish colonization.”
Castro hopes the workshops will encourage visitors to see textiles as more than works of art. The process also provides a hands-on look at history, science and traditions shared through generations.
Valerie Miranda, Education Manager at the museum, said science has always been connected to the ways communities observe their surroundings and work with available materials.
Visitors will explore connections between textile-making and chemistry, environmental science, engineering and mathematics.
Two Hands-On September Workshops
Castro will lead two drop-in workshops designed for visitors of all ages.
The Charro Embroidery workshop takes place Saturday, September 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Guests will recreate traditional Charro patterns using paper and fabric scraps and create a 4-by-6-inch art print to take home.
On Saturday, September 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Flowers Embroidery workshop will introduce traditional Mexican floral patterns. Guests will work with pre-made templates, yarn and plastic needles while learning basic embroidery techniques.
Both workshops will also examine the science involved in textile-making, including the behavior of natural fibers and dyes and the strength and structure of thread.
The exhibition and workshops are included with regular museum admission or membership.
Woven Throughout History will continue after Hispanic Heritage Month with programming connected to Indigenous Peoples’ Month, Black History Month and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
The Las Vegas Science & Natural History Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate and offers exhibits and educational experiences covering science, wildlife, geology, paleontology and cultures from around the world.
